What is clubs?

Ability to use weapons is biologically based – early humans, chimpanzees and their common ancestor could throw projectiles and hit with sticks or clubs.

Clubs and stick were used at close ranges. The early Homo could deliver with great force a vertical blow with a club. The club was probably the first weapon that early humans used. Although stones could have been the first weapons, the presumed lack of bags or nets to carry multiple missiles makes it more likely that the club was the weapon of choice.
Club is among the simplest of all weapons: a short staff or stick, usually made of wood, wielded as a weapon since prehistoric times. Most clubs are small enough to be swung with one hand, although larger clubs may require the use of two to be effective.

A wooden stick or bone might have had a knot or joint at the end or might have been fashioned so that it had a larger blunt end. Such simple clubs are all of the same material, usually wood or bone. The Irish shillelagh, made of blackthorn wood, is one such example.

The war club was an essential element of Mississippian warfare. These clubs were probably made of hickory, although other suitable woods were available and measured from one to three feet in length.
